It sounds like a boil. I usually get them under my arms, perfect environment, and with deodorant to clog your pores - sighs-. I usually take a cloth, soak it in alcohol and keep it over the area for an least 15 minutes twice a day. It generally goes down within a day or two, and disappears completely in a week. If it's at an awkward place on your leg, you can hold the cloth on with some of the white first aid tape. That also seems to keep the infection localized.
Absolutely don't try to pop it, because as one of the other ladies said, it can spread to surrounding tissue internally and cause a staph infection.
Boils are always a huge pain, metaphorically AND literally!
They can be lanced as an in-office procedure by your doctor, but if you can get them to come to a head on their own and drain naturally... that's really preferable. Lancing can be extra painful! Soaking in a tub of hot water also helps, and it's a good way of getting a little you time in as well.
Not to be totally gross, but I had a similar situation not too long ago. I needed my annual anyway, so I talked to the doctor. By that time, it had burst inside, and spread the infection so it can get serious enough for meds. She did say ingrown hairs are really common, especially where there is contact with clothing, and to use moist heat as a first step.

Thanks, I was told to do this by someone else and the heat really made a difference. I was also told it could have been caused by chafing because right before I noticed it I had went on my walk in a pair of really loose shorts and my thighs got really irritated.
It does sound like an ingrown hair for sure. Those really are ( pardon the pun ) a real pain! It probably wouldn't hurt to see a doctor just in case, so he can give you treatment that might head off an infection. Take care and let us know how it goes!
I don't know about boils but it could be an ingrown hair. Get a wash cloth wet with really hot water and put on the area. The heat and moisture seem to draw up the infection to the top of the skin. If it does not go away I would get to the doctor and have him check it out.
Does anyone know anything about boils? I have never had one and I tried to look it up on the net, but didn't get an answear to what I needed. Sorry if this grosses anyone out, but I need an answear.
I have this knot(bump) that came up on the inside of my thigh, it is like a purple blue knot, it is not extemely painful, just tender and you can tell it goes deep. When you put pressure on the area that is when it hurts like he11. Thought it might also be an ingrown hair. It has been on there about 2 weeks now, but it is not coming to a head. I noticed this after I had walked one night in loose shorts and my thighs felt real rashed up from rubbing together. any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
