I'm a big veggie lover, but in today's economy I need to watch my pennies very carefully and still try to eat right. Not always easy! Fortunately I read that there are 5 "super" veggies that are very cheap and you may already have them on hand: onions, carrots, broccoli, peppers and tomatoes. All great for you, full of antioxidants, vitamin C, beta-carotene and folic acid. All important things in the fight against heart disease and cancer among other things.
I just saw a special by Dr. Daniel Amen about brain health and he mentioned a number of foods that are important to keeping our brain healthy. I don't remember them all but he mentioned: blueberries, salmon, brocolli, red peppers and green tea.
Other recommendations were don't smoke, limit alcohol and caffeine consumption, keep your weight under control, wear helmets that fit, wear your seatbelt and exercise.
His point was Alzheimers actually starts about a decade before it is diagnosed and it's never to early to start preventing the onset of the disease.
My husband has Type II Diabetes, so we definitely have to be careful about his sugar intake. Most commercially processed juices are far too high in sugar for diabetics to drink, so either we make do in home-made smoothies or try to find low-sugar/no sugar added alternatives. Unfortunately, there just aren't that many... and ultimately, we get more health benefits from eating the fruits, rather than drinking them.
V8 has a juice, too called Acai Mixed Berry, it's pretty tasty. I'll have to look for that sorbet. I want to try goji berries, too. I found a place you can get the seedsto grow them, not sure they'd grow here, though.
My favorite tea is Ginger Snap. Yum! And that's great to know about papaya! As a diabetic, I can't have much watermelon. A Snickers bar is lower on the glycemic index then watermelon!
This is the first I have heard of the acai berry, I will have to look for it when I go shopping. I find for myself that the more exotic fruits are difficult to know when they are ripe. I have bought a mango a few times but don’t think they were ripe or I was expecting a different flavor. Does anyone have tips on buying good ripe fruit?
I love papaya and pears. I am a big fruit eater and always have some kind of fruit on hand. I just wish I could get more than bananas and oranges into my husband lol.
I've been dying to try the acai berry in any form really ever since a good friend of mine told me about it. It sounds wonderful in many ways! He told me that Haagan Daz makes a sinful acai sorbet called Brazilian Acai Berry. It's supposed to taste like blueberries, blackberries and a hint of grape. I saw a picture of it online and it is a beautiful purple color. Think I might give that a try!
Bolthaven Farms, which is available in my grocery stores' refrigerated produce section, puts out an Acai-Pomegranate juice that I've been trying, and alternating it with cranberry juice.
> Acai berry is also supposed to be the new super
> anti-oxidant berry.
I've not tried it yet, but I heard it was kind of a chocolaty flavor. They have a blend Acai-Raspberry in the store, that I'd love to try if that's the case.
I love those chewy ginger candies you can get at whole foods type stores. They're great for an upset tummy or nausea plus they taste really good. There's also a ginger brew soda with real ginger pieces in it which is super good, not like regular ginger ale with artificial flavors. It takes getting used to because it's more spicy, though.
